I was talking with a friend the other day who is finishing up her paperwork to be a citizen of the US. She was so excited. She was telling me all about the process, how she needs to take the final test, take the pledge, and then she gets to vote! She was so excited about voting, and it inspired me. Not more than an hour later, I was thinking yet again, about how my vote doesn't matter. It didn't take long for the shine to wear off of my inspiration, I guess.
It doesn't matter who I vote for this presidential election, as most likely, CT will go for Obama. It's gone for a democrat in the last five elections...and even if that weren't the case, the electoral college is set up so that my individual vote doesn't actually count, as has been proven before when candidates have won the popular vote, but lost in the electoral college tally.
So - what's the point?
And after asking that question I almost always feel like a jerk. Women literally died so that I could have the right to vote.
And yet - the idea that my vote doesn't really matter still comes back to me. Does anyone else ever feel bummed about this?
